Mark Zuidhof looks back on Potato Europe with satisfaction

On 11 and 12 September we were at Potato Europe with our French subsidiary Desmazières. Agrico managing director Mark Zuidhof looks back on the international potato fair with a satisfied feeling.

Partly due to the weather there was a good turnout at the fair and at the Agrico and Desmazières stand, Zuidhof says. “It rained quite a bit in France, making it too wet to harvest. As a result, there were many French seed potato growers who stopped by our stand for a talk.”

During the fair, Agrico worked closely with subsidiary Desmazières. France is already the largest and most important partner for Agrico, and as a cultivation and sales area the country is only becoming more important. “In terms of cultivation we see opportunities to expand the French acreage. At the same time, we see that the French processing industry is expanding, creating more demand for seed potatoes.” Thanks to the good collaboration with Desmazières, Agrico can meet that growing demand.

Zuidhof also detected a healthy demand for Agrico seed potatoes from other areas during Potato Europe. “The interest from North Africa, especially Egypt, was great and many people from that region had come to the fair.”

Potato Europe happens at a good time, according to Zuidhof. “It's the kickoff of the sales season. The harvest has started, you know what is growing and what can be expected, in terms of quality and yield.”

The French potato harvest is in full swing. In terms of yield and quality the harvest seems to be promising. Though, French potato growers are also facing a late harvest. “There is still a lot to be done,” he said.

Potato Europe is held alternately in four countries. This year France was the host; next year it will be the Netherlands' turn again. Potato Europe will then be held on 3 and 4 September 2025 near Lelystad.
