Dossier Phytophthora-resistance (late blight)
Agrico has expanded its Next Generation portfolio considerably and now includes nine highly resistant potato varieties. A suitable potato for every segment. From boiling potatoes, salad potatoes to starch potatoes, red or yellow peeled and small baby potatoes. Our experts explain the specific characteristics of these unique, sustainable potatoes. Meet them all.
Along with its subsidiaries, Agrico works continually on its future-orientated growing strength. After years of intensive breeding work, in 2018 Agrico became the first trading company to launch a full range of Phytophthora-resistant (late blight) varieties on the market: the Next Generation potatoes. Agrico keeps adding potato varieties suitable for various segments to this range.
In addition to very high resistance to the world’s most common potato disease Phytophthora infestans (late blight), these varieties have excellent consumption properties and achieve high yields. This is how Agrico works with its customers to make potato cultivation more sustainable and to offer a diverse range in terms of taste, appearance and processing possibilities.
The high resistance to Phytophthora (late blight) range currently consists of the varieties Alouette, Carolus, Levante, Nofy, Twinner, Twister, the still young baby potato Jacky, the new crisp variety Beyonce, and the new innovative starch variety Ardeche. Together the varieties have different resistance genes. This benefits the grower’s risk distribution of crop loss.
Agrico anticipates a number of new promising late blight-resistant varieties in the forthcoming years. Agrico's Research centre is therefore working further on breeding even more sustainable varieties, searching for even multigene resistance.
Next Generation varieties with high resistance are already a major step forward in controlling the risks of Phytophthora (late blight) and lay a good foundation for a healthy crop. Have you met any of them?
